It was not difficult for Sonia Höger to
choose profession. Since her childhood, when
studying at the Goethe School Institute in
Buenos Aires she showed a decided enthusiasm
to paint and draw. The simple game of
drawing shapes, distributing colors, and
enjoying how her hand changes the aspects of
everything she draws, held a place of
privilege from early on.
Though she grew in the vigor and intensity
of the great city of Buenos Aires, she also
had the opportunity to live a lucky contrast,
frequent and prolonged stays in the
countryside, in direct contact with nature.
These two environments were complemented to
mold a temper of calm and thoughtful
sensitivity.
During the course of her humanistic
secondary school, the early painting
definitely becomes her passion.
She knows she can transform her canvas in a
window that presents a vast universe.
Definitely not only the sense of sight plays
a role: already in that period, a
sensitivity darned creative personality, a
relaxed interpretation of the visible
environment and enthusiasm on the
inscrutable plot complete the act of
composing.
She entered the Escuela Nacional de Bellas
Artes Prilidiano Pueyrredón, graduating as a
National Teacher of Painting. There she
studied with notable teachers, such as
Cristina Dartiguelongue, Roberto Firpo and
Carolina Antoniadis.
From then on, the horizon of her creativity
presents itself as unlimited, tempting and
full of possibilities.
In addition to painting, in the final year
of her studies she begins to introduce
herself into photography, a commitment which
is treated experimentally in its early
stages. Years later, in Munich, she
supplemented her knowledge in workshops.
Her photographs show an austere style,
whether in the selection of framings or the
approach of the subject, stressed by a
monochrome palette in most of the works. The
black and white is sober, concise,
highlights and gives strength to that
simplicity.
If characters appear, they are immersed in
an everyday scenario, suggesting a natural
manner that defines them.
In the work of Sonia Höger the integration
of different materials is a predominant
feature.
Acrylics, inks, gouache, chalk, clay, sand
or wax are applied to achieve multiple
layers, enabling the development of textures,
transparencies and overlays.
She also uses metal objects, wood, rubber or
cardboard found in open spaces, which have
suffered wear and tear due to an exposure to
weather, which add the stamp of time passing
by when incorporated into her paintings.
Pure forms, well-delimited color fields,
characteristic of an earlier period thin
down to give rise to a new surface treatment
and for a leading role of intuition.
There are no commitments with visual reality,
nor compromises with a logical nature. There
is just a task of constructing and composing,
destroying and repairing constantly, with
perception as the highest aim.
Of course, this is the dynamics of the
constant seeking; once a result is achieved,
satisfaction is the motive for continuity.
